OTTAWA, September 11, 2003 — The Competition Bureau welcomes Professor Aidan Hollis from the University of Calgary in Alberta as the 2003/2004 holder of the T.D. MacDonald Chair in Industrial Economics. Professor Hollis will provide expert advice on competition policy and industrial economics and support the Bureau's economists in their research of current economic theories.
Professor Hollis was educated at Cambridge University and the University of Toronto, where he obtained a Ph.D in Economics. His main research has focussed on Industrial Organization, having published in four areas: competition policy related specially to pharmaceuticals, electricity market restructuring, international aspects of competition policy, and microfinance. His work has appeared in the Review of Industrial Organization, Health Economics, Labour Economics, and International Review of Law and Economics among others.
The T.D. MacDonald Chair in Industrial Economics was established in 1990. The position is named after the late T.D. MacDonald in honour of his extensive contributions to modern competition law. Mr. MacDonald was the first Director of Investigation and Research, holding this position from 1950 until 1962.
The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency which ensures that all Canadians enjoy the benefits of a competitive economy. It oversees the application of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act and the Precious Metals Marking Act.
