The Joint Offer by Bell Globemedia Inc. and Cogeco Inc. does not contravene the Competition Act

OTTAWA, May 2, 2001 — In January, Quebecor filed a complaint with the Competition Bureau alleging that the joint offer by Cogeco Inc. and Bell Globemedia Inc. to purchase the assets of the TQS network contravened the Competition Act. As a shareholder of TQS, Cogeco had a right of first refusal over any offer for TQS shares.

After careful examination, the Bureau has concluded that the joint offer by Bell Globemedia Inc., a subsidiary of BCE Inc., and Cogeco Inc. does not contravene the Competition Act.

Under the divestiture order issued by the Competition Tribunal on January 15, 2000, Quebecor must sell the TQS television network by December 31, 2001.

The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency which ensures that all Canadians enjoy the benefit of a competitive economy.
