OTTAWA, August 15, 2001 — The Competition Bureau announced today that it will not challenge the proposed acquisition of Anadime Corporation by Newalta Corporation in the oilfield waste treatment and disposal services business in Alberta. After a thorough review, the Bureau has concluded that these services will continue to be provided across Western Canada by two effective, and well- financed competitors, each of whom has demonstrated the ability to enter local markets and compete vigorously.
Today's announcement follows on a recent decision in the proposed acquisition of Newalta Corporation by Canadian Crude Separators Inc., where the Bureau found that the transaction raised serious competition concerns in oilfield waste treatment and disposal services in Alberta. That transaction terminated when the conditions of the offer were not met.
The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency which ensures that all Canadians enjoy the benefits of a competitive economy. It oversees the application of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act and the Precious Metals Marking Act.
