Products Using Down Blends: Worksheet

Sleeping bag Illustration
  • Where the blend consists of down from different species, or a blend of down and feathers, the composition must fall within the tolerance of commercial down and/or commercial feather. (note: the permitted 5% tolerance which applies to the percentage disclosures on textile blends does not apply to blends of commercial down and/or feather. This is to avoid a double tolerance.)
  • The declaration of "feather" must be preceded by the word "waterfowl", "landfowl" or the name of the bird of origin.
  • When the blend consists of down and feathers or a non-plumage textile fibre, the percentages of each must generally be shown in the order of predominance by mass.
  • Where crushed feathers, are part of the blend, the label, for example, should indicate "Fill: Crushed (waterfowl, landfowl or the name of the bird of origin) feathers".
  • At least 90% of the plumage must be from the stated bird of origin.
  • Words or figures suggesting 100% must not be used on products containing commercial down.
  • When down or any other fibre which is required to be shown by its generic name is a reclaimed fibre, the word "reclaimed", "reprocessed" or "reused" must be shown immediately preceding the generic name.
