On-Line Business Directory Web Site - Misleading Representations

In , a company sought a written opinion on whether a proposed direct mail advertisement promoting an on-line business directory could raise concerns under the Competition Act.

The submitted direct mail materials, reviewed pursuant to s. 52(1) and s. 74.01(1)(a) of the Competition Act, outlined the Web listing services being offered and the potential benefits to businesses upon purchasing a listing.  The direct mail materials clearly identified the charges levied to clients for this service.

The opinion provided by the Competition Bureau on December 31, 2004 stated that the promotion, based on the information provided, would not give the Commissioner grounds to commence an inquiry under the Competition Act.
