Bureau Welcomes Professor Tim Brennan as new T. D. MacDonald Chair

 

OTTAWA, December 19, 2005 – The Competition Bureau is very pleased to welcome Professor Tim Brennan from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County as the 2006 holder of the T. D. MacDonald Chair in Industrial Economics. Professor Brennan has worked in both U.S. federal competition enforcement agencies and on the White House staff. He is the first academic from the U.S. to serve as Chair, providing expert advice to the Bureau on economic policy and enforcement matters.

Professor Brennan has a Ph.D. in Economics and an M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His research has focused on areas such as competition policy, economic regulation, telecommunications, electricity restructuring, law and economics, information policy and intellectual property. He has taught at George Washington University and served as an economist for the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. In 1996 and 1997, Professor Brennan was a member of the U.S. President’s Council of Economic Advisors, where he advised on regulation, industrial organization, and antitrust matters. From 2003 through 2005, he served as a staff consultant to the Bureau of Economics of the Federal Trade Commission. He currently teaches public policy and economics at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

Professor Brennan will join the Bureau in January 2006 for a period of one year.

The T.D. MacDonald Chair in Industrial Economics was established in 1990. The position is named after the late T.D. MacDonald in honour of his extensive contributions to modern competition law in Canada. Mr. MacDonald was the first Director of Investigation and Research, holding this position from 1950 until 1962.
