Competition Bureau Wins Award
Ottawa, — On , the Community of Federal Regulators recognized the outstanding work of the Competition Bureau's FairWeb project with an award for innovation.
Project FairWeb was launched in 2004 as the Competition Bureau's first dedicated Internet surveillance and enforcement program aimed at combating misleading and deceptive advertising found on the Internet. The Bureau has since been involved in over 1,000 compliance and enforcement actions targeted at Internet businesses found to be non-compliant, and has attained an 80 per cent compliance success rate.
Canadians shop for products and carry out transactions on a daily basis through the Web. While many businesses promote their products in an honest and forthright manner, the opportunity exists for others to promote products using misleading claims either on their Web sites or through email. Project FairWeb is the Bureau's response to this problem. Through redesigned work processes related to gathering intelligence and conducting Internet sweeps targeting fraud and deception, the Bureau has sought to improve the accuracy of information on the Web, and to enhance consumer confidence in the Internet economy.
Domestic and international departments and agencies have benefitted from this project with regards to intelligence gathering, compliance and coordinated enforcement. Furthermore, the Bureau's intelligence report is now key in setting priorities for the North American health fraud compliance and enforcement agenda.
