Electronic Anti-Corrosion Device

The Competition Bureau initiated two inquiries following the receipt of complaints alleging false or misleading representations of an electronic anti-corrosion device, marketed by two independent Canadian distributors. The representations gave the general impression that the device would protect the entire surface of a vehicle against corrosion.

Under subsections 74.01(1)(a) and (b) of the Competition Act, the distributors were making representations to the public that were materially false or misleading, as well as making representations about the performance of the product that were not based on adequate and proper testing.

Initially, the Bureau’s view was that the claims and representations being made about the product were not supported by adequate and proper tests. Subsequently, the distributors performed additional tests on the device which were deemed by the Bureau to be in accordance with the provisions under the Competition Act.

As a result of these additional test results, the inquiry was discontinued on June 27, 2008.
