Ottawa, — Melanie L. Aitken, Commissioner of Competition, is pleased to announce that Paul Collins will be joining the Competition Bureau as Senior Deputy Commissioner of the Mergers Branch. This two-year appointment has been arranged through the Interchange Canada Program.
Mr. Collins is a highly experienced competition lawyer with significant expertise in mergers. He is currently the Chair of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Bar Association's Competition Law Section and is widely recognized by his peers in Canada and internationally as a leading antitrust lawyer.
Mr. Collins will be taking a leave of absence from the law firm of Stikeman Elliott LLP, where he has been a Partner since 2000 and head of the firm's Competition/Antitrust Group since 2003. In his new role with the Mergers Branch, Mr. Collins will be responsible for overseeing and making recommendations to the Commissioner on all merger reviews. As well, in the senior deputy role, he will be a key player and source of advice to the Commissioner on a range of matters. Mr. Collins will be a member of the Bureau's Senior Management Committee. He will also be involved in working closely with the Bureau's international anti-trust partners. Clear conflict of interest guidelines have been established for the duration of his appointment.
