Competition Bureau Announces that GST No Longer Charged for Advance Ruling Certificates

Ottawa, — The Competition Bureau announced today that, following a recent decision by the Canada Revenue Agency, Goods and Services Tax (GST) will no longer be charged on applications for Advance Ruling Certificates issued under the merger provisions of the Competition Act.

Parties who paid GST for Advance Ruling Certificates are eligible for a refund if they submit a claim within two years after the GST was paid. Relevant forms and instructions are available through the Web site of the Canada Revenue Agency.

An Advance Ruling Certificate may be issued to a party or parties when the Commissioner of Competition is satisfied that there would not be sufficient grounds on which to apply to the Competition Tribunal for an order against a proposed merger.

The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency that contributes to the prosperity of Canadians by protecting and promoting competitive markets and enabling informed consumer choice.
