Competition Bureau hosts bilateral meeting with the Japan Fair Trade Commission

OTTAWA, September 12, 2013 — The Competition Bureau today held its fourth bilateral meeting with the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) since the signing of the Canada-Japan Cooperation Agreement in 2005.

Bilateral meetings between the Bureau and its international counterparts facilitate communication, collaboration and trust between agencies. Today’s meeting with the JFTC reflects the Bureau’s commitment to increased international cooperation and the exchange of best practices through face-to-face conversations with its counterparts.

Topics of discussion included agency priorities, competition advocacy, the intersection between competition and intellectual property law, and recent enforcement cases.

"We were very pleased to host the delegation from the Japan Fair Trade Commission, led by Chairman Kazuyuki Sugimoto," said John Pecman, Commissioner of Competition. "Our discussions were informative and insightful, and continue the strong relationship between our two agencies. Exchanging ideas and sharing experiences regarding current issues in competition law enforcement is extremely valuable to our work."

The Competition Bureau, as an independent law enforcement agency, ensures that Canadian businesses and consumers prosper in a competitive and innovative marketplace.
