John Pecman, Commissioner of Competition, is pleased to announce that Jonathan Chaplan has joined the Competition Bureau Legal Services as Executive Director and Senior General Counsel.
Mr. Chaplan served as Deputy Executive Director and General Counsel at the Department of National Defence Legal Services since 2008. Previously, from 2005 to 2008, he acted as Senior Counsel at the Competition Bureau Legal Services providing legal advice and litigation services to the Commissioner of Competition in matters involving many high profile mergers matters, as well as criminal matters such as in the air cargo surcharges investigation.
Mr. Chaplan brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in many areas of the law from working in both the private and public sectors, including the Competition Bureau.
- Mr. Chaplan has a background in mediation. He joined the Federal Government in 2001 as Dispute Resolution Manager for the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA), later becoming the director responsible for CEAA's Regional Offices.
- He was a sole practitioner from 1985 to 2001, primarily practicing in the area of Criminal Defence.
- He was appointed Executive Director and Senior General Counsel at the Competition Bureau Legal Services on January 6, 2014.
