November 4, 2014 — OTTAWA, ON — Competition Bureau
The Competition Bureau is hosting a one-day workshop on innovation and antitrust today. Held at the Ottawa Convention Centre, the event was kicked off by the Commissioner of Competition, John Pecman, who delivered the opening remarks. The Commissioner highlighted the importance of innovation for businesses, the government and competition agencies.
During the course of the day, various speakers from business, academia and government, both domestic and international, will discuss the role of innovation across various industries, explore the relationship between competition and innovation, and examine how innovation should best be assessed by competition agencies.
More specifically, the workshop features three panel discussions on the factors that drive Canadian businesses to innovate, the relationship between competition and innovation, and the current treatment of innovation in competition law analysis in Canada and other key jurisdictions.
- The purpose of the workshop is to advance the thinking regarding how innovation and dynamic competition should be assessed by competition agencies in order to better inform antitrust analyses, particularly in innovative industries.
- This will increase the Bureau’s knowledge in an important area of the Canadian economy, and thus enable it to better protect the marketplace and foster competition.

"Given the importance of innovation to economic growth, the treatment of innovation as it relates to competition is an area ripe for improvement. Examining the means to measure innovation and ensuring that the proper tools and methods are at our disposal are but a few of the important considerations before us today."
