Archived — Competition Bureau warns of fake emails offering consumer refunds

Bogus Competition Bureau emails also seek financial information

March 30, 2015 — Ottawa, ON — Competition Bureau

Emails that appear to come from the Competition Bureau offering refunds to consumers are bogus and should be reported to the Spam Reporting Centre.

Fraudsters may be trying to take advantage of recent cases settled by the Bureau that include refunds to consumers; however, the Bureau does not send out refunds to consumers nor would it ask for financial information in an unsolicited email.

These spam emails may be phishing attempts to obtain a consumers’ personal information. The senders of these emails will likely use the personal information to withdraw money from the bank or put a charge on a credit card.

If consumers want to verify or obtain information on any consumer refund related to a Competition Act court proceeding, they should check the Bureau’s website, which contains information on how to make a claim for a refund for each specific case.

Consumers are encouraged to report spam and phishing emails to the Spam Reporting Centre. If you believe money has been fraudulently removed from your bank account or that an unauthorized charge has been placed on your credit card, contact your financial institution immediately.

Quote

"Phishing emails are a blatant attempt to defraud consumers – something we take very seriously. This is Fraud Prevention Month and we want people to know that the Bureau does not send out refunds, nor do we ask for personal banking information. These emails are being sent by scammers and we encourage consumers to report them to the Spam Reporting Centre."
Morgan Currie, Assistant Deputy Commissioner
