Precious Metals Marking

This guide provides an outline to the quality and marking requirements of precious metals articles subject to the Precious Metals Marking Act and Regulations. The following seven sections provide most of the pertinent information regarding the application of marks to precious metal articles as directed by the Act and Regulations.

• Precious Metal Articles (Not Plated).
• Gold Plated Articles.
• Silver Plated Articles.
• Plated Watch Cases.
• Spectacle Frames.
• Plated Flatware.
• Plated Hollow Ware.

Note that it is not necessary for the dealer to mark a precious metal article for quality. If a mark is used, however, it must be factual and conform to the standards described in this document.
