Bureau Files Comments to Telecommunications Review Panel

OTTAWA, August 16, 2005 – The Competition Bureau has filed its comments to the Telecommunications Policy Review Panel as part of a consultation on Canada's telecommunications policy and regulatory framework.

In its submission, the Bureau is advocating that it play a greater role in assessing the need for regulation in telecommunications.

It also recommends:

  • improved information sharing between the Bureau and the CRTC, to make the best use of expertise within government;
  • the removal of foreign ownership requirements in telecommunications; and
  • increased reliance on market forces, where warranted.

The Telecommunications Policy Review Panel was established by the Minister of Industry on April 11, 2005, to conduct a review of Canada’s telecommunications policy and regulatory framework.

The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency. We contribute to the prosperity of Canadians by protecting and promoting competitive markets and enabling informed consumer choice.
