Dairy Product Substitute

The Competition Bureau initiated an inquiry on January 25, 2005, following a six resident complaint regarding the marketing practices of a producer of a dairy product substitute.

The complainant alleged that false and misleading representations were being made about the fat content of its product in comparison with one produced and promoted by a target company.  Sections 74.01 and 52(1) of the Competition Act prohibit the making of materially false or misleading representations to the public.

In consultation with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), which also received the complaint, it was determined that the CFIA was best equipped to address the issues.

As a result, the inquiry was discontinued on October 25, 2005.
