In response to questions from the media, I can confirm that the Competition Bureau is investigating alleged price fixing between competitors in the retail gasoline industry in local markets in the province of Quebec.
The Superior Court of Quebec has granted search warrants based on evidence that there are reasonable grounds to believe that price fixing has occurred.
There is no conclusion of wrong-doing at this time and no charges have been laid. All evidence will be analysed and we will refer the case to the Attorney General if appropriate.
Our enforcement record clearly shows that the Bureau is committed to investigate complaints in the petroleum industry and in all sectors of the Canadian marketplace and to take enforcement action under the criminal provisions of the Competition Act whenever appropriate.
The Bureau’s role is to ensure a fair and competitive marketplace so
that Canadians benefit from competitive prices, product choices and quality
services. If we find evidence of behaviour that violates the
Competition Act, we will not hesitate to take appropriate
action.
The Competition Act
requires that the Bureau conduct its inquiries in private. As such,
we cannot comment further on this matter in order to protect the integrity of
the investigative process.
