Adam Fanaki Appointed Special Counsel to the Commissioner of Competition

Ottawa, May 16, 2007 – Sheridan Scott, Commissioner of Competition, is pleased to announce that Adam Fanaki has been appointed as Special Counsel to the Commissioner of Competition for a two-year period, beginning July 9, 2007.

As Special Counsel to the Commissioner, Mr. Fanaki will be part of the Competition Law Division of the Department of Justice Canada. He is currently a partner with the law firm of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP.

Mr. Fanaki is a highly experienced competition lawyer who has extensive expertise with both the criminal and civil provisions of the Competition Act. He is presently Chair of the Legislation and Competition Policy Committee of the Canadian Bar Association - Competition Law Section. He has lectured on competition law and civil litigation at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University and at the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario. In 2006, Mr. Fanaki was recognized by LEXPERT magazine as one of Canada’s Top 40 Lawyers Under 40.

The Special Counsel to the Commissioner is part of the Competition Bureau's senior management team, sitting on the Bureau’s Senior Management Committee and providing advice on key Bureau files. The responsibilities include the provision of strategic input on a range of issues, including the conduct of litigation.

Mr. Fanaki’s secondment has been arranged through the Interchange Canada Program, which promotes stronger ties between the federal public sector and private organizations. Clear conflict of interest guidelines have been established for the duration of Mr. Fanaki's appointment.
