Dear Mr. Pierce:

I am writing to you in response to your letter of January 18, 2007, in which you invited me to comment on a Discussion Paper on amending The Textile Labeling and Advertising Regulations (TLAR). I note that the purpose of TLAR is to provide uniformity and accuracy in marking and advertising of consumer textile articles and textile fibre products in Canada. We have concluded that most of the issues discussed in the paper relate to articles that are not in our regulations, or processes that do not concern Manitoba, e.g. delegation of authority at the Federal level.

The textile industry in Canada has in general been declining over the years. The issues of concern to Manitoba relate to the survival of this industry, which go beyond the scope of the Discussion Paper.

That said I appreciate any eEort to provide uniformity and accuracy in marking and advertising of consumer articles and textile products in Canada. We both share the goal of protecting the consumer.

Yours truly,
Minister
