Project False Hope: Combatting Cancer Fraud
"The fight against cancer is hard enough, don't let fraud make it harder."

As part of the Competition Bureau's ongoing Internet surveillance and enforcement program aimed at combatting misleading and deceptive advertising online, the Bureau has found hundreds of Web sites offering fraudulent, unproven products which claim to treat or cure a variety of conditions, such as cancer.

A recent Statistics Canada study found that almost 8.7 million Canadians searched for health-related information online, with almost a quarter of them searching for information on alternative remedies. Additionally, only 38% spoke with their health care professional about the information they found online.

The Competition Bureau has launched Project False Hope in order to combat misleading advertising of cancer products online. As part of this initiative, the following interactive flash quiz tests your knowledge of the tactics used by scammers who sell bogus cancer cures and treatments online, and teaches you how to avoid falling victim.

Remember, it is important to always consult a health care professional before trying any new treatment. A heath care professional who knows your medical condition is your best source of information.
