Guilty plea in business directory scheme

OTTAWA, June 28, 2013 — The Competition Bureau announced today that Claude Berthiaume received a 12-month conditional sentence after pleading guilty in the Court of Quebec to making false and misleading representations in relation to a deceptive telemarketing operation that defrauded businesses in the United States.

Mr. Berthiaume was sentenced on June 7, 2013, to six months of house arrest followed by six months of curfew, and was prohibited from engaging in telemarketing for 10 years.

The charges against Mr. Berthiaume were laid on March 11, 2011, following a Competition Bureau investigation that uncovered evidence of a scheme operating in Montreal that deceived businesses into paying for business directory listings they had not ordered.
